The Bakewell-McKnight family papers include diaries, letters, manuscripts, and typescripts of speeches and published and unpublished writings, newsclippings, and genealogical research, documenting the lives of members of the Bakewell and McKnight families of Pittsburgh and the Boardman family of Philadelphia and the history of the Bakewell, Pears & Co. glass manufacture in Pittsburgh. Notable items include glassmaker Benjamin Bakewell's letters to Harm Jan Huidekoper on Unitarianism and letters sent to him from the Marquis de Lafayette and Daniel Webster ; letters, a muster roll and special and general orderss from the Civil War service of Benjamin Bakewell with the U.S. Army's 12th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and 15th Pennsylvania Militia Regiment ; Mary Ella Bakewell's fictionalized accounts of her work for women's suffrage and ministry in the Episcopal Church ; letters and related material documenting the experiences of Euphemia Bakewell with the YMCA's Educational Department in France at the end of World War I ; and Martha Harding Bakewell McKnight's history of the Bakewell and Boardman families.
